Xylazine, also known as the “zombie drug,” has grabbed headlines because of its link to strange behaviors and health dangers. But what is xylazine, and why it is named as “Zombie
Drug”?
Let’s break it down simply, looking at what it does and why it’s risky. Xylazine is mainly used in veterinary care to calm animals like horses and cattle, acting as a sedative, muscle relaxant, and pain reliever. It’s in a group of drugs called alpha-2 adrenergic agonists, which help produce calming effects by affecting specific receptors in the body.
Why the scary nickname?
When people misuse xylazine, it can make them very sleepy and confused, like zombies in movies. They might move slowly, breathe slowly, and have a slower heartbeat. Because of this, and because it’s sometimes used for fun in cities, it’s earned its spooky reputation. People use xylazine for fun because it’s cheap and easy to get, especially if they’re already dealing with addiction or can’t get other drugs. But using xylazine this way is really risky and can make people really sick.
Side Effects of this drug:
One major danger of misusing xylazine is its unpredictability. Because it’s not made for people, there are no set amounts or purity levels. This means users might accidentally take too much, which can lead to overdose and even death. Also, xylazine is often mixed with other drugs like opioids or cocaine, making it even riskier.
Long-term use of xylazine can seriously affect both the body and mind. People who use it a lot might start feeling like they need it just to get through the day. This can turn into a really tough problem called addiction, making it hard to stop using without getting help from someone who knows how to help.
Moreover, misusing xylazine can worsen mental health, causing anxiety, depression, and thinking problems. It can also harm physical health, leading to breathing, heart, and stomach problems.
Sierra Leone is dealing with a serious problem involving a dangerous drug called “kush,” which is causing chaos in the country. Kush is made from human bones and has been linked to grave robbery and harmful effects on people who use it. The President of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio, has declared a national emergency to tackle this crisis. He’s formed a special team called a task force to address the increasing number of deaths caused by the drug. The government is taking urgent action to protect people from the dangers of kush and to restore safety and order in the country.
In conclusion, while xylazine might seem tempting, using it for fun is very risky. It’s crucial to avoid drugs not meant for people and get help if you’re having trouble with substance use. Staying safe and healthy should always come first, so it’s best to steer clear of dangerous substances like xylazine.
